Smith Likes New District

Congressman Lamar Smith said today he likes the new 21st Congressional District unveiled Friday by a three-judge panel. He also announced that he would run for re-election in the new congressional district. Several congressional districts in Texas had to be redrawn because of a recent Supreme Court ruling.
The new district includes parts of Bexar and Travis Counties as well as all of Bandera, Blanco, Comal, Kendall, Kerr, and Real.
“I look forward to continuing to represent my constituents in the current district and to again representing residents in the counties that were returned to the 21st Congressional District,” Smith said. Smith’s district included Bandera, Kendall, Kerr, and Real when he was first elected to Congress in 1986 but were removed from his district in an earlier redistricting process.
“For the past several years, I have worked closely with the citizens of 21st District as we’ve supported high technology, improved education, created more good jobs, and worked to better secure our borders,” Smith said. “Those have been my priorities and I am committed to them.”
Smith is a senior member of the Homeland Security, Science, Judiciary and Ethics Committees. He has chaired the Subcommittees on Immigration, Crime and Intellectual Property.
The National Journal has recognized Smith as one of the 100 most influential people in Washington.
Smith was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas and graduated from Yale University and Southern Methodist University Law School.
