Lamar Smith Signs the Mount Vernon Statement
February 24, 2010
Congressman Lamar Smith today signed The Mount Vernon Statement, a pledge based on the founding documents of our Country that defines the core beliefs and values of the conservative movement.
“I join thousands of conservative Americans in signing this pledge,” Smith said. “It is important now, more than ever, that we not lose sight of the founding principles of our country and the document that has made our county so successful, our Constitution.”
The Mount Vernon Statement establishes a “Constitutional conservatism” whose foundation of “first principles provides the framework for a consistent and meaningful policy agenda.” The principles for policy are as follows:
It applies the principle of limited government based on the rule of law to every proposal.
It honors the central place of individual liberty in American politics and life.
It encourages free enterprise, the individual entrepreneur, and economic reforms grounded in market solutions.
It supports America’s national interest in advancing freedom and opposing tyranny in the world and prudently considers what we can and should do to that end.
It informs conservatism’s firm defense of family, neighborhood, community and faith.
“This historic document is an important reaffirmation of our Constitutional beliefs and a step in the right direction towards truly protecting our Country from the liberal agenda of those currently in power,” concluded Smith.
Smith serves as the ranking member on the House Judiciary Committee, as well as a senior member of the Homeland Security and Science Committees. He was first elected to represent the 21st Congressional District in 1986.
The 21st Congressional District includes all or part of Bandera, Bexar, Blanco, Comal, Kendall, Kerr, Real and Travis Counties.
